“Tax”-achusetts introduces new Computer Service Tax.

On July 31, 2013, Governor Deval Patrick signed a new bill into effect that increased taxes on tobacco and gasoline as well as introduced a new computer service tax. Not only does the state I have lived all my life in now have the highest computer service tax, but it is the second highest on tobacco taxes. A pack of cigarettes that was $6.45 on Monday cost $8.52 on Wednesday. Gasoline is increased $0.24 per gallon under the new tax now as well. The computer service tax that Massachusetts now has is imposed at 6.25%. This is the highest of the now four states that have a similar tax. The other states are New Mexico (5.1%), Hawaii (4%) and South Dakota (4%). There were a lot of points in the

Is Linux becoming Anti-Social?

I remember when I was using Ubuntu (like around 10.10) they began using Gwibber as a default way to read and post to a bunch of social networks (Twitter, Facebook, and Identi.ca) however in the latest version when you put your online accounts into the settings, you can read Twitter and Facebook posts in the dash, but there is no way to post unless you use a separate program called Friends which I have found to be buggy. You can install Twitter clients and a Facebook client each seperate, but what happened to the ability to post 1 update to multiple networks? I know there are a handful out there and Identi.ca is gone as of recently, but Choqok was not updated to the new Twitter API which makes it

Making VLC The Default Player In LinuxMint 15

By default, Linux Mint (and most Ubuntu based distributions) makes Totem the default media player. There is a way to make this switch to VLC in one quick and easy way. You can do this by going into settings and selecting “Applications & Removable Media” to do this. If you look you will see Music and Videos defaulted to Videos (which is actually the Totem Player). However, in my experience this doesn’t set right at all when you change it to VLC. So, here is a quick and dirty way to switch over to vlc for all your media files. Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) Type in:gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.listWhich will prompt you for your administrative password. After you type your password, gEdit will open your default file association list. Go to

How To – Install Netflix, LOVEFiLM, or Redbox Instant Apps in Ubuntu or Linux Mint

Who likes movies? Better yet who likes movies and wants to watch them under an Ubuntu derivative (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.) or Linux Mint? Come on! I know you all want to. Even in the face of Netflix, LOVEFiLM and Redbox seeming not to have much love for the Linux users who want to stream their movies in a rabid fashion. Partially the fault of the services themselves for they chose to use Silverlight to be the backend for the streaming. Silverlight, a Microsoft Product, is not available under Linux because Microsoft refuses to port it over to be used under Linux. So what can we do? TORRENT THE HELL OUT OF THE MOVIES! No. That is not the answer. With Microsoft and the streaming services basically saying no to

I have been a big supporter of the past Humble Bundles since they first came out. This one has a lot to offer and brings Fractal to Linux. The drill, as always, remains the same: the Humble folks have some games and you can buy them during the next 2 weeks for whatever price you like. Pay more than $1 and you get a key for Steam; pay more than the average and you get some cool extras. On offer for the next fortnight are: Aquatic adventure game Aquaria Puzzle game Fractal: Make Blooms Not War Zombie-themed survival game Organ Trail: Director’s Cut Stealth strategy platformer Stealth Bastard Deluxe Rhythm game Pulse (Android only) Beat the Average titles: Combat game Frozen Synapse Point and click adventurer Broken Sword: Shadow of
